Error from domain wrapper: Domain already exists, it was not added

when I tried to install mynewdomain.com on my shared hosting server using the addon domains within cpanel

I got the following error

Addon Domain Additions

There was a problem creating the addondomain. Show Details

Error from domain wrapper: Domain already exists, it was not added.: mynewdomain.myserverdomain.com

I didn’t quite understand what the complaint was about because it said Domain already exists

However this is a new domain that I was trying to install!

OK, here are the steps to troubleshoot

Check

Whether you have a subdomain with the same name already created?

You need to check within the /public_html folder (this is where you will have separate directories for all your sites hosted on the server)

Make sure that there is no other folder with the same name, it is common to have a folder with the same name if you have installed domains with the same name but with different extenstions. For example

mynewdomain.com

mynewdomain.net

if you are using the automated addon domain process which comes with cpanel then both domains would try to create the folder “mynewdomain” within /public_html and would give you an error when installing the second domain.

OK, so to avoid the problem you need to change the folder name for the new domain you are trying to install, then there will not be a clash of names within /public_html

OK so Next time if this happens it is possible to change the name of the subdomain

When adding the new domain , the 2nd option is to create the subdomain name.

If you are using cpanel this one is automatically populated with a folder name for your site in /public_html

That is creating the subdomain without clashes !.

OK, this is very unusual…..

I usually like open source software or Mac software. But now Microsoft has come a long way from the buggy and user unfriendly software produce a few real gems !

I started using Windows live mail and quite like it ! By the way this was installed as part of the process when I installed Windows Live Writer (WLW is the other good software by windows and it’s free. ) at What is the best desktop client for Wordpress

I tried to setup Windows Live Mail to access a Gmail account,

Before doing this I did a bit of research by Googling for “windows live mail gmail”

After reading through the various tutorials I was not too impress with having to configure gmail accounts manually, so as always I conducted my experiment looking for an easy way

and found one !!

OK, All you have to do is

In Gmail Settings –> Forwarding and POP/IMAP –> choose Enable IMAP –> Save Changes

In Live Mail -> Enter

Email address [thisismyname@gmail.com]

Password for the Gmail account

Display Name [This is my name]

This is where it gets easier in my approach, DONT tick Manually configure server settings for e-mail account ! then Click Finish on the Next screen

This will successfully configure Windows Live email for Gmail in just 3 steps !

Enjoy, as always if you would like to share you experience please leave a comment below.

I came across this error when I was trying to import an sql file to transfer a wordpress based site. The story is that I bought a site and the seller gave me a dump of the mySQL database for the site. I had to import this to my hosting account. So I created a installation of Wordpress on my hosting account using Fantastico and accessed the specific database for the new site.

The process is a bit tricky because you do not want to mess your other databases in the hosting account because that can destroy your other sites !

I thought it will be a simple matter to import the file but as always sql never works without giving errors.

During the import of sql (through phpmyadmin), I kept getting the following error,

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

SQL query:

–

– Dumping data for table `wp_flickr_post`

–

INSERT INTO `wp_flickr_post` ( `uid` , `name` , `value` )

VALUES ( 1, ‘commercial_only’, ‘1′ ) , ( 2, ‘legacy_support’, ‘1′ ) ;

MySQL said:

#1062 – Duplicate entry ‘1′ for key ‘id’

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

OK so how did I fix this ?

Simple,

Dropped all the tables inside the database so that I had an empty database and nothing else.

Then I tried to import the sql file and it went very smoothly without any problems.

So the lesson I learnt was that If I am importing an sql file, especially to setup a new site or to move a site, then I should always remove all the tables within the newly created database and then do a fresh import.

It really helps if you know at least the basic SQL commands because then you will be more confident to troubleshoot. After all the SQL dump of the site that you get in a .sql file is nothing but SQL statements.

As always if you have any question as always leave a message below.

Sometime Wordpress can be very annoying and mess up all you SEO efforts. For example it can include a /tag/within your URL. So the URL you get is

www.yoursite.com/tag/keyword

What you actually wanted was

www.yoursite.com/keyword

Because this would be better for SEO purposes and the Search Engines like Google would prefer this format and rank you higher.

Another problem with this is that the same page is reachable through both urls above, so there is a chance that the search engines might get the wrong idea and think that you have duplicate content on your site ! This is simply not good for your site as far as search engine traffic is concerned.

The solution to fix this problem is to use “Redirection” [http://urbangiraffe.com/plugins/redirection/] which is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections. With a 301 redirect the search engine bots will be forwarded to the correct format of the URL so you can avoid any duplicate content issues as well.

OK so this is how I fixed it ….

Redirect Tag pages
==================
/tag/(.*) => /$1

This will match any URL that starts with /tag/, and will redirect it to the same URL but without /tag/. For example,

http://onlinembadegreeprogram.co.uk/tag/university-of-maryland-university-college-umuc-business-administration-mba-degree/

will be redirected to a URL without the /tag/

http://onlinembadegreeprogram.co.uk/university-of-maryland-university-college-umuc-business-administration-mba-degree/

OK, this is a very annoying issue when you are using wordpress. For SEO purposes you select your perma links to be of a certain format. But once you select the url format it does not use what you selected and keep inserting the actual “Category” name with in the URL. This is very annoying when you are trying to get rid of this category string from the URL.

I’ve tried various things including modifying the php files within wordpress but still without any luck until I tried this….

So if you wanted to get rid of this category keyword here is what to do…

In the Permalinks options, set the "Custom Structure" to

/%category%/%postname%/

and your "Category Base" to

/.

By the way if you still have not improved your URL structure for Wordpress then I would do it immediately because it is very important for the SEO for your site. For example it is always a good idea to include the keywords that you are targeting within the URL. Things like the domain name and URL count heavily with search engines when they rank your site for specific keywords.

Please let me know whether this worked for you, and if you have any suggestions or questions by leaving a comment below.

OK, this is my attempt to document the Mac OSX Keyboard shortcuts that I use frequently and therefore find most useful. Why would you want to use Keyboard shortcuts at all ? well these makes life a lot easier and cooler and faster.

One of the reasons which prevented me from fully migrating from Windows and Linux to Mac was the shortcuts. I am sure they are well documented but they are difficult to locate. I have tried various resources such as the seminars at the flag ship Apple store in London Regent street etc, but no one seems to have any idea of being a power user on a Mac. Using Skype helped me a lot to get familiar with macs, because otherwise I didn’t have the necessary patience to get to know the mac os. I just started using my first mac for chatting and gradually discovered all these short cuts. It really helped that I am very familiar with shortcuts on Windows and Linux.

1. Taking Screenshots
I use screen shots a lot for various reasons including keeping records of online transactions to creating interesting images for my blog posts.
I use the commands below, it’s always a good idea to have the volume at a reasonable level so that you can hear the noice which emulates a camera taking a photo. This will let you know that the screenshot has been taken and unlike windows or even Linux Mac saves the screenshot on the desktop.
Compared to other operating systems this makes life easier by not having to open an image manipulation program for taking and modifying screen shots.
I normally use "Preview" which comes with Mac to modify these images.

Command-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Shift-4, then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it as a file on the desktop, very useful for blog posts etc.
Command-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it as a file on the desktop

2. Minimise open windows one at a time
Useful when you want to get some windows out of the way to de clutter your view. This wouldn’t minimise all windows. The behaviour is different to the normal minimising by clicking on the minimise button, this put the application window in the docking area and you need to click again to get it back up. With this shortcut it’s easier because this minimises only out of view and doesn’t dock.

Command + H

Try

Command + Shift +F3

to minimize all open screens with a theatrical effect. Very useful when you want to see the Desktop !

3. Toggle between various application windows
Command + Tab (–>|)
Hold the Command button down and keep pressing "Tab" to cycle through all the open applications.
When you reach the application you want to select release the command key.

This is one of the most useful shortcuts for me because I use a number of applications at the same time.

4. Closing an application
Focus on the application window that you want to close and press "Command + Q", this will not only close the open window for that application but close the application it self !

5. Toggle between all open windows within the same application
For example when I am using Firefox I tend to open a lot of new browser windows, to toggle between these I use
Command + `
Very useful to cycle through open windows

You can combine this with the previous command to select the specific application window that you want to close
Hold down the command button then keep pressing the Tab key until you reach the application icon that you want, then while still holding the command button press "Q" to quit that application. This is a quick and an easy way to cycle through all the open applications and quit.

I will keep updating this post to include the shortcuts as and when I get familiar with them. In the mean time if you have any suggestions or would like to comment please do so below . I am more than happy to include your favourite shortcuts here.

The idea was to test the router by connecting using the Wired LAN as well as the Wireless LAN to find out whether this router is better than the one given free of charge by O2

OK before I went and tested on O2 I had to reset my very old DG834G Version 1 router !
There is a tiny hole at the back of the router next to the first Ethernet port on the rear panel, you need to use a uncurled paper clip and press and hold for about 10 seconds and release to reset to factory settings. Watch the Test LED light on the front panel, while you are pressing the reset button for 10 seconds this Test LED will come on and then it will switch off. You do not need to reboot the router while resetting it !.

This is the advanced precision tool I used to reach the RESET button

Now that the router was reset,
I used the default login details “admin” for username and “password” for the password [obviously without the "" marks]

Now I was back in the router admin panel and configured the following to access O2 ADSL line

ADSL Settings
Multiplexing Method : LLC Based
VPI : 0
VCI : 101

Basic Settings
No user or password required
Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login : No
IP Address : Get Dynamically
DNS Address : Get Automatically
NAT (Network Address Translation) : Enable
Router MAC Address : Use Default Address

Now it was Testing time !
I tested on the Ethernet LAN using a cable and got a maximum of 2888Kbps as you can see below

Then I tested using the Wireless LAN and got a maximum of 2888 Kbps as below.

Was I happy with these speeds ? NO !, the Thompson router (given by O2) gives about 4 times more bandwidth !
Anyway it was an interesting experiment and I have another ADSL router in case if I need backup.

If anyone needs help with setting up a router with O2 or any other provider leave a note below and I will try my best to help.

I am really impressed with the 4 GB shuffle, it’s size is great for carrying around and the ear phone cord length is ideal for me so that accidentally I don’t kick it and break the cord. As with most of the apple products it is a magnet for finger prints, you just need to have a micro cloth handy for removing the finger prints and get it back to its’ shiny self. Quite like the controllers on the ear phone cord. The USB cable which comes with the shuffle can be a bit longer, but still I quite like it, especially because when I connect it to the macbook, it looks like a small tail on it

OK, now to multiple play lists

Playlists is a great way to organise your music in a more easy to find way.
Finally now you can create multiple play lists on ipod shuffle without mush hassle …

1. First connect the ipod shuffle to the computer so that you can access it via iTunes
2. You can either drag and drop the current playlists on iTunes or create the new play lists directly on the ipod shuffle folder within iTunes
3. To change the play list on the shuffle, hold down the centre button for longer than a second, the shuffle will start to readout the name of each playlist. Release the button when it starts reading the names of the play lists, when it reaches the playlist you want to select press the middle button once more and it will select that playlist
